Projects and Monitoring

What is a watershed restoration project?

A watershed restoration project is any activity within a watershed that improves habitat directly or facilitates habitat improvement over time. Restoration projects may result in immediate benefits or may begin a long process toward habitat improvement. An example of a project with immediate benefits is the modification or replacement of a culvert or irrigation diversion structure that blocks fish passage. Upon completion, fish passage improvement is immediate. An example of a restoration project that takes many years to provide benefits is limiting cattle access to a stream through fencing. It may be several years or even decades before streambank stability and stream shading are improved.
