GRMW Projects

One of the major goals of the GRMW is to restore freshwater tributary habitat for the enhancement of anadromous salmonid populations in the Grande Ronde and Imnaha subbasins. The GRMW works with a variety of partners to coordinate and implement habitat restoration in the Grande Ronde Basin. Projects are submitted to the GRMW for funding through the BPA Environment, Fish and Wildlife Program. Technical services and in-kind funding are provided by our partners to accomplish the objectives and tasks of the GRMW.

The GRMW is able to transcend public/private ownership boundaries to plan and implement habitat restoration where it is needed. Through collaboration and coordination, the program promotes consistency and unity in reaching goals, meeting objectives, and implementing results-oriented projects.

Projects have addressed nearly every component of watershed health including water quality, water quantity, instream habitat complexity, riparian condition, streambank stability, and fish passage. While many of the benefits are already evident, others will accrue over longer time periods. Projects addressing fish passage problems, sediment inputs, and flow deficiencies have demonstrated immediate benefits. The benefits of other projects addressing improvements in riparian vegetation, bank stability, and stream temperature will become more apparent over time.

The GRMW began coordinating restoration projects in 1994. Approximately 335 projects have been implemented through the GRMW program through 2006.

  • 254 miles of stream channel and streambank treated, including placement of large woody debris, boulders, log and rock structures, and restoration of historic stream channels.
  • 332 miles of fencing, including exclosure and cross-fencing.
  • 3,328 acres of riparian habitat treated, including protection with exclosure fencing, vegetation planting, seeding, noxious weed control, floodplain/wetland/meadow restoration, and CREP
  • 23,301 acres of upland habitat treated, including modification of agriculture practices (eg. conversion to no-till farming), noxious weed control, seeding, tree thinning.
  • 15,789 acres of "mixed" habitat (comprised of both riparian and upland habitat) treated, including exclosure fencing, vegetation planting, seeding, thinning, and noxious weed control.
  • 279 miles of road closures/obliteration, i.e. close access to roads or decommission roads by re-contouring and restoring natural slopes.
  • 179 miles of road improvements or relocation, including drainage improvements to reduce sediment and relocating draw-bottom roads away from streams.
  • 437 livestock water developments (for off-stream watering), including spring, pond, and well developments.
  • 66 fish passage improvement sites, includes improving or removing irrigation diversion structures, instream structures, and stream crossing structures (bridges and culverts).
  • 23 irrigation diversion improvements, including complete reconstruction of diversion structures or improvements (e.g. install headgates) to conserve water; install fish ladders or weirs to improve fish passage.
