Lostine River Fence

Project Summary

The Lostine River, a tributary of the Wallowa River, supports spawning habitat for steelhead, chinook salmon and bull trout, and thus is a high priority for habitat restoration. Protection of the riparian zone with exclosure fencing addressed many of the limiting factors identified for the Lostine River: high stream temperatures, excess sediment, streambank erosion (channel instability), lack of woody debris, and animal waste inputs.

Project Actions

  • One mile of electric exclosure fence on 0.5 stream miles.
  • Protection of 6 acres of riparian habitat.

Project Objectives

  • Improve water quality and fish habitat by reducing sediment, compaction and animal waste inputs.
  • Improve riparian conditions by enhancing plant cover, increasing bank stability, and decreasing soil erosion.

Project Partners

  • Private Landowner
  • Wallowa County NRCS *
